How to Use Neuroscience to Be Productive yet Mentally Calm

In the business world, objectivity is key. Knowing where you want to go, when how and in how long, directing your strategies and relieving anxiety, will allow you to focus on your idea for the long term, right?

Not always.

We live in a fast-paced world and our decisions often override important decisions. This often happens when we get carried away by the avalanche of thoughts and worries, focusing on what has passed and what will come, forgetting one of the greatest learnings: living in the present.

The state of presence is where everything flows. Also known as “state of flow”, everything seems to get aligned and one is able to be productive yet mentally calm, with a state of full attention to what is being done.

Achieving the state of flow is not easy, but some practices like meditation can help. For Neuroscience, our brain is trainable, so it’s worth introducing it to good habits.

The practice of meditation, for example, helps to improve the state of presence, or Mindfulness, which has been widespread in the business world based on increased focus of temas, and ultimetely the rise of productivity.

In addition, meditating helps to develop our spiritual side, that is, the connection with whom we really are, in short, with our own essence.

Spirituality and mindfulness can influence some specific areas of the brain, which are able to activate our sense of confidence, perseverance and faith in life.

What Neuroscience has to say about Spirituality

Recent studies have shown a deep connection between spirituality and mental health. It has been observed that “believing in something greater” creates new neural connections and increases the feeling of reward.

Mostly the quality of one’s mental life can often be measured by the size of one’s faith: at least, that’s what you see in older people who are seriously ill. There is a sense of resilience when your spiritual sense is secure.

According to professor Anna Yusim of Yale Medical School, spirituality can even change the neurochemistry of the brain. Look at people who fully trust their abilities: there is emotional strength, which can guarantee more strength and emotional intelligence.

Spirituality is a form of deep connection with your inner self. It’s a conscious way to use our most valuable asset – time – to evolve!

When that happens, the individual strives to always be learning, to get to know himself and to better understand the other. Spiritualists invest more in self-care, and the consequence of this is self-love and self-confidence, fundamental pillars for self-fulfillment both in the personal and professional areas.

Have you ever stopped to reflect on your connection to spirituality? It is common that with our exhausting routines, emotional fatigue and our “escapes from reality” in the various social networks, or even through addictions, we have lost the connection with ourselves?

In short, the concept of spirituality is directly related to knowing what you believe in and taking the next step towards your growth.

Is Spirituality a Sign of Emotional Intelligence?

As an emotional intelligence expert, I would say that spirituality and emotions are intrinsicaly linked.

If we let our emotions take over our body, without being able to dissociate them, there can be confusion, exhaustion, tiredness and a lot of sadness.

When you can’t manage your emotions, you end up being controlled by them.

Practicing spirituality is based on self-observation. It’s trusting that something good awaits you, even in adverse moments. It’s your personal beliefs for good.

A person who lives their spirituality can better deal with the challenges that life presents. If life is certainty and constant movement, spirituality can offer us a foundation: to identify the best relationship in the flow of life and all our best relationships – because we improve ourselves.

If you’re still a little confused, don’t worry, managing your emotions can be a task that requires a little more care and attention.
