The world of work will never be the same again. Are leaders prepared for it?
Their main challenge is, in between the chaos worldwide, to make their teams keep up with being productive while taking care, not burning them out.
So, they have to find ways to support their teams to optimize their work, in order to increase the value without incremental effort.
This is the ideal world, where many companies dream of turning their teams into High Performant, but leaders have a big challenge ahead once most of them are still struggling to adapt to this ‘new normal.’
However, they can start with doing an essential homework: creating proper working conditions for people to use their potential fully.
But how exactly, you may be asking yourself. My favorite and easiest way is as per the equation below:
Performance = Potential – Interference
Coined by Tim Gallwey, the formula above means a person’s performance corresponds to their true potential when any interference that hinders them is removed.
So, you leader, first focus on removing the interferences of your people at work, which come in the form of unnecessary meetings, overload of e-mails and messages, multitasking, lack of suitable tools and resources for the work execution, political games, excess or imbalanced workload, etc.
In addition, leaders should ensure that their teams’ well-being is also in place. Otherwise, there’s no point where performance can become sustainable over time.
Find below some ways to pursue that!
- Check in on your team. Cultivate a genuine interest in understanding how your people actually feel, and support them whenever is needed.
- Lead by example. Avoid multitasking or sending messages and e-mails outside working hours. Otherwise, it may generate expectations in others for a prompt response.
- Develop Empathy. Listen actively to your team, and cast your judgment aside. Try to understand their emotions and needs, and consider them when having a conversation. This will allow you to nurture a healthy relationship with people from your circle of convivence.
- Be vulnerable. This will make your team realize that you are not perfect (no one is, right?) and even may share some common issues or uncertainties. This enables creating a real connection with people.
- Talk openly about mental issues. Your team should feel comfortable to openly talk to you about work and how it may affect their mental well-being.
This might help you to create a safe space where your team can feel understood and supported. Consequently, they can grow toward their full potential and deliver better results.
