How to Best Manage Gen Z Employees in the Workplace

Yesterday, a team lead approached me to ask for suggestions what to do with two team members, who are always complaining but never willing to come up with proposals for solution.

Still according to him, the two of them join meetings visibly unprepared and are always bringing up topics without a context, and by the end of the discussions, they mostly try to push the responsibilities of their tasks to their superior.

Is this also often in your own team?

What if I told you, as an additional information, that such a behavior described above, come from two young people below 26 years old, would that make more sense for you now?

Of course, such personality traits are not applied to everyone in that age group, but people from the Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, usually have some things in common, also depending on the culture.

When it comes to work, it’s fundamental to understand the characteristics of Gen Z for then attracting, engaging and especially leading them!

As they were the first generation to be born in a fully digital era, the Gen Zers are revolutionizing the world of work!

Even though the Millennials – those born between 1981 and 1996 – currently represent the largest adult share in the world today, and therefore also the majority in the work market, the Gen Zers who are actually leveraging the way of working.

Gen Zers are tech savvy! Their increasing speed of digital consumption is sometimes seen by previous generations as superficiality in the construction of knowledge and relationships, disinterest and even laziness.

While for Millennials the work, in general, means raising the standard of living, for Gen Zers, quality of life matters more. For the latter means having a Purpose!

And work for them has to bring that, whether in the form of autonomy, flexibility, leisure, learning opportunities or rewards.

By 2025, the Generation Z will represent up to 27% of the work force worldwide (World Economic Forum)

Older generations are increasingly finding difficulty do deal with Generation Z, often described as detached, spoiled, inexperienced yet very demanding.

The generation differences directly impact the workplace.

Therefore, bringing them together and creating synergy are vital for the business success!

Furthermore, it’s also important to have in mind that:

The Gen Z of today will be the Leader of tomorrow! How are you getting prepared for it?

Leaders who are able to develop people and turn the characteristics of generations that are all together in the same team, into a rise of collaboration as well as of positive results in business!
